VENTURA Energy Storage, formerly known as Satikoi Energy Storage Project, is a 100 MW battery energy storage facility under development for ground solar energy in California, the United States. After completion, it will become one of the largest battery storage facilities in the United States.

The development work before construction, as well as the project's rights and commercial agreements, have been completed. The main construction project of the VENTURA energy storage facility is expected to start in the second half of 2020 and be put into operation in 2021.

When fully charged, the facility with a 100 megawatt battery will be able to accommodate 400 megawatts of electricity, which will be sufficient to provide approximately 80000 households and businesses with 4 hours of electricity.

The VENTURA energy storage project is currently being developed near the city of Oxnard, north of Los Angeles in VENTURA County, California.

The project will occupy a three acre Brownfield site in a private industrial park near the VENTURA County Juvenile Justice Center. Battery storage facilities will be developed near a critical transmission line

The site was selected as a clean, non emission battery energy project to replace the Puente Gas-fired power plant Plant of the National Natural Resources Research Institute, which was proposed to replace the decommissioned Mandalay Power Plant on Oxnard Coast.

Equipped with VENTURA battery storage facility

The VENTURA independent battery storage facility will be equipped with 142 Tesla extra large lithium-ion batteries, each with a storage capacity of 3 megawatts. Each large battery has a separate cabinet, approximately 30 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet wide.

The project will also deploy 36 transformers, as well as an auxiliary substation and a water supply facility for the derailment line. The gift box and transformer will be arranged in rows and separated by a secondary foundation gravel transmission channel.

The other components of the project will include a water storage system and underground medium voltage transmission lines.

Extra large batteries placed in cabinets or containers will store energy during off peak hours and be released to the power grid during peak demand.

Power transmission

The stored power from the large battery unit will be transferred to Southern California Edison National Grid through the 66KV transmission line system extending from Santa Clarita Valley to VENTURA County and Santa Barbara County.

Power Purchase Agreement

According to the 20-year electricity procurement agreement signed in April 2019, the electricity for this project will be supplied to Edison International's subsidiary, Southern California Edison Company.

The California Public Utilities Commission approved the Public Works Act in December 2019.

Contractors involved in the VENTURA battery storage project

Tesla has been selected as the ground power engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the development of the VENTURA battery storage project.

The company participated in the noise impact analysis of the VENTURA battery storage project in 2019.

The Tri State Building and Construction Industry Council has signed a project labor agreement with Stratigraphic Solar Company to provide the manpower needed to develop battery energy storage projects.
